Activists attack beef research

By Gene Hall

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has attacked beef industry claims that lean beef can be part of a heart healthy diet that helps manage cholesterol. The PCRM filed a complaint with the state of Texas, charging deceptive trade practices.

Some research indicates that genetics is the biggest factor in cholesterol levels, but diet certainly matters.

It is helpful, however, to consider the source here. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is often not responsible and somewhat short on doctors. The organization seems devoted to ending the consumption of meat.

PCRM is often a mirror image of PETA and aggressively pushes vegan diets. The Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association is standing by the research.

It’s very fashionable to attack beef these days. Often, the persons behind the attack are the most important information of all.

The preceding commentary is brought to you by Texas Farm Bureau, the “Voice of Texas Agriculture.” Called “Your Texas Agriculture Minute,” TFB will issue thought-provoking editorials each week—via print and audio—to spark understanding of agriculture in the Lone Star State and its impact on each and every Texan.
