Calling all sweethearts and chocolate lovers alike. Do I have a treat for you! Every year I try to come up with something that will make my entire family happy for Valentine’s day, and this year is no exception.

And though desserts are definitely not the norm at our house, I try to make it count for something good other than just taste. Dark chocolate and fresh berries are the secret “good for you ingredients” for this recipe.

For Chocolate Heart Dessert Pizza, you will need…Chocolate-Heart-Dessert-Pizza
2 c. dark chocolate chips
1 1/2 c. flour
1 c. butter, softened
1 c. fresh berries
1/2 c. granulated sugar
1/2 c. packed light brown sugar
1/3 c. cocoa powder
1 egg
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt
1 jar marshmallow crème
chocolate syrup for drizzling
powdered sugar for dusting

We all know fresh fruits are good for us in moderation, but did you know dark chocolate is, too. It actually has a lot of good benefits for your heart. Like helping lower blood pressure and improving blood flow just to name a few. And lucky us—February is also National Heart Month. So this is a great way to enjoy it.

Start by preheating your oven to 375 degrees. While the oven is heating, sift the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt together and set aside.

In a mixer, whip the butter and sugars together until fluffy. Then, mix in the egg and vanilla.

Gradually add in the flour mixture and mix until well combined. Stir in the chocolate chips by hand to keep from breaking them up. You want to chill the dough for about 30 minutes before this next part.

Once chilled, place the dough on a sheet of parchment paper and flatten to about 1/4 inch thick while molding into the shape of a heart. Place the parchment with the dough on a baking sheet and bake for 18 to 20 minutes or until the edges are crispy. Then let it cool for 30 minutes on a wire rack.

Because the cookie is going to expand during baking, I like to trim the edges for the cookie once it is cooled to define the heart shape. After that, spread on a thin layer of marshmallow crème before topping with the fresh berries of your choice. I also like to add a chocolate syrup drizzle and a sprinkling of powdered sugar right before serving.

Showing your love for those around you through food can be rewarding for everyone. And a little sweet in moderation can actually be good for you. Treat your sweethearts and yourself with some dark chocolate. From all of us at Texas Table Top, enjoy!
